Second acts and new adventures

If life is indeed a stage, as Shakespeare famously wrote, then there needs to be more than just one act.

I like building things. Over the years I have been a carpenter, a computer design engineer, a marketeer of microchips of incredible complexity. There is a creativity involved beyond the mechanics of construction or the analytics of digital design. Maybe not the same as the art of music or sculpture or painting or dance, but it is an applied creativity.

The time has come to turn a page

Life would be boring if we didn’t try new things, take that turn in road up ahead, see where it goes. Be more creative.

In my ideal second act, I would have been a scuba diving instructor by now. My goal was to have a Caribbean beach bum job teaching and escorting impressionable young tourists by day and sipping cold beers with my diving buddies by night. Unfortunately my inner ears and an aging inability to equalize under pressure had other plans for me. Sigh. I was damn good it too.

Writing was a skill I had not been very good at. Truth be told. If I had any doubts, there were plenty of school teachers who reminded me. Luckily though, a stubborn Spanish streak inside me submerged my ears to their drowning discouragement.

As a second act, I want to see just how deep into the literary ocean I can take my writing. For years it had been only for my personal amusement, for connecting with a loved one or dear friend or to make a particular point during my professional career. I want to see if I can hone the art of word choice into communicating to a wider audience the images and impressions of my experiences and let loose the crazy stories trapped in my head.

Most the stories you will see here will be nonfiction, but you will also find poems. I am working on some longer fiction as well. It has been a struggle with the long form to be frank, but I will get there, building stories with just the right words.

California is my home, but my New York upbringing still courses through my veins. I love traveling the highways, but hikes on mountain trails still give me joy. Retired from my high tech career, writing is my second act.
