New ship in port

Flying Cloud – Acrylic on leather

I have previously posted stories of the “Sovereign of the Seas” a clipper ship model scratch built by my father back in the 1950’s. I retrieved it while cleaning out his garage after his passing. All that remained intact by 1996 was the hull and three broken mast stems. Everything else was in plastic bags and boxes. Thus began a slow step by step journey in its restoration. Luckily I also had retrieved the original 1926 “Ship Model Making” book by E. Armitage McCann, which my father used to guide him. The restoration was completed in 2020. One good side effect of the Covid19 lockdown was the abundance of time. I am reposting some of those earlier pictures.

Then something surprising happened after my wife’s father passed. Found in his possessions was an acrylic painting on stamped leather. We know very little about its origins other than it was a gift from a dear friend back in the 1960’s. I tried researching the signature on the painting, but found nothing thus far. As far as I can tell the painting is of the sister ship “The Flying Cloud”. Both ships were designed and build by the famous ship builder, Donald McKay. I have tried to reverse image search the painting on the web to see if the artist had used earlier painting as his/her reference. I could find not that were a perfect match.  The name appears to say “R.E. Hart”. I could find no references to that name either. The friend who gave the painting to my wife’s father was not that name either.

So, by serendipity or providence both of these works, the model and the painting came to us from each of our fathers and are now together
